El Escorial: una excursión

By | 30 January, 2015 | 0 comments

el escorialFew places near Madrid have more countryside and bourgeois charm than San Lorenzo de El Escorial, famous for its impressive monastery and for having been a royal residence from Easter until autumn for the court of King Felipe II, which gave it the category of Royal Site. The king’s successors changed the habit of staying there throughout summer for short stays during November and only during autumn months with King Felipe V.

Masterpiece of Herrerian style, the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial can also be visited in winter, from 10.00am until 6.00pm from Tuesday to Sunday, with tickets costing 10 euros. Inside you can admire heritage gems such as its Royal Library as well as the pantheons of kings and princes.

This sober yet impressive location is the resting place for members of the Spanish Royal Family, but also don’t forget to visit the art gallery and the Architecture Museum.

Outside this sacred and royal site, you can walk around the narrow streets of this traditional town and follow some of the itineraries indicated on this page, such as Calle Floridablanca, which seems like a set of a José Luis Garci film, including the churros shop.

The gastronomic offer is considerable in San Lorenzo, with many restaurants offering menus from 15 to 20 euros in price on Plaza de la Constitución. Remember the name of Cafetín Croche, a pleasant bar inspired in modernist cafes of 1920s Paris, which has an abundant menu with different types of coffees, ice creams, homemade milkshakes and even spirits to emulate those poets who searched for inspiration in the vapours of absinthe.

From our 4-star hotel by the Puerta del Sol it is very easy to get to El Escorial. You just have to get the regional train at Sol and change to the line that takes us to this town outside the Spanish capital.
